On March 4, 2010, at the Copal Gallery on El Paseo Drive, Palm Desert, California,
a fine art exhibition called " Biomutants" opened to a crowd of 500 attendees! The dynamic exhibit of
futuristic sculptures were inspired by an article creator Rik Phillips read concerning the International Space
Station NASA had prepared with biological, as well as man-made materials, which were attached to satellite exteriors.
The materials were exposed to solar radiation and meteor showers for as long as five years, conditions that would
never be experienced on Earth. Several satellites fell to earth, dropping space refuse and exposed biological
materials on land and in the oceans. Rik then supposed what would become of the biological materials as a result
of the situation. |

| Phillips was raised in the 1950’s and 60’s when science fiction pop culture was prevelant in movies and comics books. "The Biomutant sculptures, with crab-like legs or multi-legged bodies, are certainly a throw-back to my youth," Rik says nostalgically. "We now live in a time when science fiction is really happening, gaining a whole new level of popularity. Not only is technology changing faster than we can comprehend, but our weather and climates are changing due to holes in the ozone. We as humans are changing physically and emotionally because of the economy and technology. In a way, the Biomutants are a metaphor about what is happening to human beings and our time on the planet." "Biomutants", a series of fine art metal sculptures by Rik Phillips, was shown until March 31st, 2010. | |||||||||||
